About

Mission

The Global Carbon Observatory (GCO) advances a comprehensive understanding of carbon exchange among the atmosphere, land, and ocean. Its mission is to preserve, analyze, and expand long-term data records essential for detecting and attributing changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄)—the two most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

Through the curation of authoritative datasets, the development of global observing capacity, the pursuit of innovative measurement opportunities, and the enhancement of data analysis and modeling frameworks, GCO strengthens scientific understanding of the processes that govern carbon fluxes. In doing so, it supports sound climate decision-making and global action toward carbon management and mitigation.

Vision

A world where transparent, reliable carbon observations empower nations, institutions, and communities to make informed, science-based decisions that safeguard the planet’s climate system.
